Mumbai, April 30, 2017: Marathi Vigyan Parishad, a well-known Mumbai based organization involved in propagating science in society has inducted Mahyco’s Founder and Chairman Dr BR Barwale as its honorary member for his immense contribution to Indian agriculture sector through Science applications..
Padma Bhushan Dr. B.R. Barwale, a Recipient of The World Food Prize, has been the driving force and visionary behind the successful seed innovations of Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company Private Limited (Mahyco).
On receiving this honour, Dr. BR Barwale said that, “I am delighted to be an honorary member of this prestigious organization and would like to thank Marathi Vigyan Parishad for this recognition. Such recognitions inspire us to double our efforts in applying science and innovations for the cause of Indian farmers.”
Dr. B. R. Barwale is one of the earliest agri-entrepreneurs post-Independence, whose efforts not only led to the development of the seed sector in the state of Maharashtra but also across the country. Dr Barwale is widely recognised as the Father of the Indian seed industry for his distinguished contribution towards the growth of the seed sector through path breaking innovations to improve the farm productivity. His continuous efforts to bring scientifically advanced seeds made a lasting impact in transforming the lives of millions of farmers. Apart from his immense contributions to the seed and agriculture sector, Dr. Barwale is also playing a leading role in providing access to affordable healthcare and education to a large part of the rural population, especially in the Marathwada region.
Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company Private Limited (commonly referred as “Mahyco”) is one of the largest and most diverse private sector seed companies in the country. It was founded in 1964 by Dr. B. R. Barwale, an entrepreneur with a farming background, in Marathwada region of Maharashtra. The company slowly grew to its present stature with a footprint across India. Since 1964 Mahyco has used R&D to establish itself as a pioneer of high quality hybrid/open-pollinated seeds, through strict adherence to its motto, “Quality Seed – Mahyco Seed”. Marathi Vigyan Parishad (MaViPa) is involved in propagating science in society. Registered in Mumbai, this organization’s objectives are to propagate science in Marathi language, Enrich Marathi language to express science effectively, Inculcate science temper among people and Encourage science research. It has total 66 chapters in Maharashtra while 4 Chapters outside of Maharashtra. This includes Goa, Belgaon, Vadodara and Bhopal Chapters. These Chapters work through languages like Konkani, Kannada, Gujarati and Hindi, respectively, along with Marathi and English. The organization is a recipient of 1992 National Science Award from Department of Science and Technology, Government of India while FIE Foundation has also felicitated MaViPa. Marathi Vigyan Parishad Patrika has been awarded Best Magazine by Maharashtra Foundation in the year 1998.
